We can shit on the Left all we want for their bad immigration opinions and policies, but the reality is that the Republicans had control of congress and the presidency multiple times in recent history and had more than enough opportunities to permanently change things for the better, but opted for the quick fix of locking the border while in office, something that gets reversed the next time they lose. They don't want to fix this, they want to use it to win elections.
I wonder if this is when the paleocons got ejected by the neoconservatives like bush. Lot of the paleos had sensible immigration takes but were liberals so they couldn’t keep their footing and got dragged left.
Oh, how the situation in this post is so, so familiar to me…. It may even have lead me to exactly the type of right wing immigration I policy I favor! Don’t ask me how, too personal for Substack ….
This woman was completely entitled to hold up the line for however long it took to understand exactly what technical procedure was being performed and why, just like you. It's the only way to ensure a proper standard of care in the occasionally capricious and negligent medical system. Smiling and nodding along is a great way to fall into a bunch of financial and medical traps, as she probably knew. Note that she also knew why she was there; it's not like the whole thing was inscrutable paleface magic.
Your real quibble seems to be with the language barrier, a rather slight anchor for the broader grievance about immigration. Don't travel and get sick or hurt is good advice for anyone, I suppose.
Yeah, I don't think the author is arguing that she was under any obligation to just accept whatever medical procedure was thrown at her. Just annoyed that she didn't speak English and it caused an issue.
I understand what was frustrating about the experience, but I'm only being half-cheeky when I say maybe he just needs MORE immigration in his area. Nobody around me is going to have a language problem with any business that isn't going to be cleared up by a Spanish-speaking employee very quickly.
(Christ, couldn't the nurse have at least learned the word "mismo"? I am NOT saying she's racist for not doing that, or any kind of a bad person, just that it would have clearly helped her to have a ~100 word Spanish vocabulary.)
I mean, approval of immigration correlates very highly with the amount of immigrants in an area, and it's because of "cultural economies of scale" in areas where immigrants are concentrated that make things easier for the immigrants themselves and for people who live around them. Good ESL programs, residential enclaves, employment networks, etc.
Note that RG does not specify the woman's nationality or language, although he does mention big tiddy latinas out of the blue at the end. Here in Texas I would assume Hispanic; but we also have Pakistanis, Afghans, Rwandans, and many more who might not find Spanish any more illuminating.
Yeah good point geoduck, Latinos are currently the focus of so much specific hatred and persecution (not from the author, from whom I am not sensing much hate even if we aren't aligned, I just mean from the broader right-of-center culture) so it's where my mind went, but I shouldn't have assumed.
I did find the concluding mention and illustration of big tiddy Latinas to be an overall benefit to the piece.
i love when Rohan Ghostwind talks about big tiddy latinas and those of us still in our pajamas. (it's because we don't like outside clothes in our homes. we're like Mr Rogers).
Was adding some with an edit but it got pretty long so I figured I would self-reply.
I can understand the concern of losing a unified culture but I honestly think most Latinos are not different enough from native born Americans to present much of a threat to it. I mean... they have the same religion as us (to put it imprecisely), isn't that getting us like 3/4 of the way there off the jump?
Consider Major League Baseball: Basically every dugout is a 2:1 split of white Americans who are mostly from the old confederacy and a bunch of guys from Venezuela, Puerto Rico, and the Dominican Republic.
There do not seem to be many actual cultural conflicts at all. Maybe 30 years ago some curmudgeon like Mark Grace would get annoyed by trumpet-y music in the clubhouse or something; those days are long gone. To guys born in the 90s and 21st century Latin culture is REALLY mainstream. And so ultimately conservative white young men and Latino young men are EXTREMELY similar to each other, they just speak different languages.
To make a fairly wide pivot, I think the same thing applies to gay issues. There IS an ascendent conservativism among young men, but I don't think homophobia is part of it the way it has traditionally been standard in right-leaning circles. Even acknowledging that the "younger = more progressive" trend is over, there are differences in the way younger people grew up that are going to leave old conservative (and liberal) policies way out of their comfort zones. You can't grow up laughing at "Big Gay Al" on South Park and take a serious stance that gay people are a threat to society.
There are so many millions of people worldwide who are either fluent in English or willing to become fluent to come to the USA. We may be selecting the wrong people, but there's little in Rohan's post which argues against the Caplanite view that immigration to the US should be radically expanded.
I'm actually curious to see attempts at an affirmative definition of "American culture" which would be broadly accepted by residents of the US. There is so much fighting about where we disagree, and so little discussion of where we agree. If trans issues are the most divisive issue in the US, what is the most unifying issue (an issue that's nonetheless divisive in a more global context, so differentiation is still meaningful)? If you're going to argue that the US has a distinct culture which needs to be preserved, you ought to be able to name more than just "speak English".
An obvious one would be "individualism", for instance. The US is the world's most individualistic country. But further immigration seems somewhat unlikely to change that.
I am always amused by the insistence that the condition of modern failed states, such as those in Africa, are caused by the history of their colonization, rather than contemporary brain drain. Seizing your human capital is far more harmful than taking your diamonds or rubber or whatever (leaving aside the fact that these places obviously still have plenty of resources post-colonization, and the line of argumentation never made sense).
1. The first 2 years of both Biden & Obama removed more illegal immigrants than Trumps 1st and this term.
2. There was a bipartisan immigration bill halfway through the Biden administration killed by Donald Trump.
3. Rightwing is using illegal immigrants as props and now is building a concentration camp system in the USA, tax money going to private prison corporations. Fucking fascist red meat and cruelty the point for MAGA.
An account - named “Alien Relay”, no less - vomits this deceptive slop with zero reference to the article, clinching its points. You couldn’t ask for better. They really are the Starship Troopers bugs that they defend online.
I have a minor quibble - the hospital should have provided a translator to accompany the bone scan patient.
I worked in a clinic where half the patients needed translators to make sure important information is getting across. We employed in-person translators and also used phone and video translation services. I'm sure that hospital also has all those options.
I think the quibble with that would be the escalating costs in labor and time that are passed on to other patients to provide translation services for a multitude of languages in a primarily English speaking country. Go to court sometime and witness the time and resources that are drained by non English speakers and the personnel that have to be hired to translate at your expense. Do we want people just agreeing to something without understanding, no not at all, but how can you be expected to be aware of the law or healthcare procedures if you can’t read and understand English? The burden falls to the person moving here and and shouldn’t be on the host nation.
I'm just describing the current state of things. The burden for serving patients falls on the hospital, which is why they already have translators. The reason why Ghostwind was inconvenienced is that no one offered one to the bone scan patient.
The clinic I worked at had many refugee patients from countries in Africa. The older generations often had poor command of English. But the kids sound as American as any of their classmates. Those kids always made me feel sentimental, because they encapsulate the American story in a way I can take pride in.
~~these bloggers seem to be blind to the idea that unfettered migration in this way creates an incentive structure~~
It's called the Empiricist's Fallacy.
And I say this as someone with a very good friend is a econ teacher, it is sometimes frustrating to try and get him to understand that "The Things That Can't Be Counted, Often Count The Most." (though he will get that on other topics)
"big tiddy latinas – we welcome you with open arms"
Odd that none of these lefties are supporting passport bros as a practical, and feminist, approach to increasing immigration and reducing poverty in developing countries (and helping women leave societies that are often relatively patriarchical and "oppressive")
It's almost like a lot of the "equality" talk from lefty women is just a cover story for individual self-interest!
Why blame "the left" for immigration when in fact it was always the pro-rich right fishing for cheap labour? Trump himself employs illegals on his golf courses.
Besides "the left" does not even exist anymore. All these fashionable college types who always sell out to the fat cats are not "left".
I’m all for assimilation. Restriction of immigration - no. Restriction of rights like citizenship, voting and social services - yes. Making people learn English, making people respect American culture and history - also yes.
But who’s listening to me. Trumps right winger policies are going to have just as stupid results as leftists stupidities. Time will tell.
The Right-Left division is managed theater. (See 2nd point.) Left moves us closer into Hell while the Right say things to fire-up the Synagogue of Satan's NPC warriors and drags us deeper.
I have some alternate points to add, including the 'outing' of what we should consider the Synagogue of Satan's secrete 5th column mass destroyers found in all families and now all institutions that have power over us.
I've been watching the UK-immigrant's grooming (raping) gangs satanic feces-storm for years in Alt-Media (those I hadn't been censored.) One of the key memories was how the mainstream media re-cast the reports 'from the victims and those fighting for them and against the situation were always caste as racist predators. And how the most retarded and truth-hating (women mostly) were so quick to fall for it and became the attack-dogs for evil, protesting efforts to spread awareness.
This is another example how womanhood became a tool use by Synagogue of Satan to hurt those Protectors still alive and themselves. In this insane world I believe I can explain it, and a Key-Log.
Ever wonder Why is this world insane and most women are so Sick?
If you I allow, I further argue that over generations have been forced to accept-insanities as normal and it has broken our minds and poisoned all major institutions that once were supportive of Truth, Justice, good-Ordering, Prudence, Charity, .. and instead of real thinking we have been indoctrinated to Feminized feelie-thinking complete with injected positions that as Golems we are best serving the Synagogue-of-Satan and their minions & goals.
The first and most significant idea to communicate is formed as a Letter to a Bishop and uses two arguments based of Modern Psychological and Catholic Theology and show what I hope is a good example of the change to the world and us all.

No arguments from me; Republicans have historically been the ones to push for open borders going back to the bush era and before
I wonder if this is when the paleocons got ejected by the neoconservatives like bush. Lot of the paleos had sensible immigration takes but were liberals so they couldn’t keep their footing and got dragged left.
Republicans stopped being mild right wing when the neoconservatives ejected the paleocons.
They were always kinda gay but the paleos were capable of having good ideas.

Yes, that's what gives him the moral authority to argue for restrictionism and assimilation :-P
